Athlete-centered Coaching - Developing Decision Makers

"Just thought I would let you know, Malvern formally asked me to take on the Head Coach role last week! We've made a really positive step towards creating a player lead coaching environment, which is a big change from how the club has previously been coached. We have doubled the numbers in training, won 3 games against the best teams in the league and narrowly lost one due to a couple of freak injuries which left us with no possession. The lads have an awesome sense of self belief and all I do is tweak our game plan through feedback from the lads. They tell me after the games what they feel they need to work on in the week and I plan the sessions based on that. Its still not fully player lead but we're a lot closer than we have ever been and the lads are responding brilliantly!!
One thing that has really worked has been the introduction of a player/coach as he has been able to support the processes from both a player and a coach's point of view, its really added a new dimension for us.
I would argue that player-centred coaching has actually facilitated faster developments in team performance for us than any coach-centred approach could. I know some have argued that it takes longer to have an effect but ours has almost been instantaneous!
Got to thank you for your support which gave me the confidence to stick to my guns when the old fashioned coaches were telling me I was a fruitloop for giving the lads so much input/control. It seems to be going well so far!"
